The Rundown: Illyana finds herself in the middle of a dangerous plot that could be connected to her past.

It’s Illyana’s birthday, but her dreams are still plagued by her past in Limbo by her alter-ego Darkchylde. At the same time, mutant children are being kidnapped in Juneau and in order to deflect from her own birthday celebration with the rest of the team, Illyana travels to Juneau to investigate. She also finds herself in conflict with the Darkchylde entity inside her.

When a group of bigots storm a funeral home holding a service for one of the missing mutants, Magik arrives to attack the demons coming for the other mutant at the funeral home and Illyana attempts to rescue her, but finds herself facing off against a creature that could be connected to the darkness she used to be a part of as well as a young man and his grandmother who have a magical mission to prevent the creature from escaping.

The Story: Allen crafts an entertaining story in this issue. Illyana is an interesting character with a rich and intriguing back story. Connecting this story to hers creates some great personal drama for the character. There’s an interesting pacing to the plot and Allen puts Illyana right in the thick of the action almost right away. I like the dark themes of the story a lot and I look forward to the follow up issue to see where the story is going next.

The Art: Peralta creates some great art in the issue. The visuals are lively and beautifully detailed.
